Since I have no choice but to leave the apartment I love (and the cats love) by January, it looks like I'll be subletting my friend Ken's place until the lease is up in May. I have mixed feelings about the whole thing, aside from not knowing how I'll survive the move when my arms shook for a good half an hour just bringing home some empty boxes donated by the nice people at Second Cup.
Bad Stuff:
The place is smaller than my current place and I can only afford it because Ken is an amazing friend and he's giving me $100 of the rent (which means it's REALLY overpriced!)
It's a basement with only half of one window (long story, converted house). So even though the artificial lighting may be better than in my current place, there's no window for Pip to look out and daydream. Also not as much room for him to run around. I'm feeling lots of mommy guilt.
The bathroom is small and HORRID! My current shower makes it hard to shave my legs but it will be next to impossible in this one.
I will in all likeliehood have to look for a new place for May, which means another freakin' move!
Not as much closet space.
I won't have my own laundry facilities and I will miss that a lot.
I really don't want to move the cats, especially Maggie.
No more free internet. And I'm not sure I'll be able to afford it so it's back to the freakin' library. Hopefully there will be fewer perverts at this one.
Good Stuff:
It's on Markham Street near College, which is a much livelier neighborhood than my current one. There's also a really neat hat shop that I can't afford to shop at, but maybe if I stand outside looking sad someone will take pity and buy me a new chapeau.
And the street itself is still pretty quiet.
It's a fifteen minute walk to Bloor Street and a little shorter to Queen. If I spring for the street car, it's even faster. I'm ten minutes from Annex Pet Supplies where I buy my babies' treats and non-toxic cat litter. And there is a Second Cup on College Street not far away and a Shoppers Drug Mart only five minutes up the road, so if I run out of food or meds I'll be okay in a pinch.
As Ken is moving out this weekend I'll have more time to move in since I don't take over until January.
The "kitchen" is nicer with more counter space and cabinets. The stove is too small but I rarely use the oven anyway and the fridge is smaller but as it's just me its' not a big deal and I'll be forced to clean it out more often.
The set-up is little better. In my current place all the electrical outlets are on the left side of the apartment, which was a bit limiting. In this place I'll be able to put my TV and book shelves near the entrance and my bed at the opposite end. I may spring for a screen for added privacy.
There is adequate storage.
The laundry room is just a few feet away from my front door.
It's close to the hospital in case anything goes wrong.
The Bathurst streetcar is just minutes away.
So, all in all, I'd rather stay put but as I can't (short of baracading myself in and buying a rifle), it could be a lot worse. I had a good cry and wore myself out last night and then slept for over twelve hours.
*sigh*
